Why Focus on the Lab?

Following a devastating 14-year civil war (1989 – 2003), Liberia’s healthcare system like many other organizations and institutions was devastated.  A few years post-war, in 2005, following the election of a civil government and with the blessing of international support including the deployment of a United Nations security force, the country is hopeful of rebuilding.  Most Liberians in Diaspora around the world have become hopeful of returning and contributing to the national rebuilding effort as well as their personal lives.

Given the daunting task of rebuilding, the country’s healthcare system is striving to meet the overwhelming demand for services.  Residents of the various counties rely on their county (public) hospitals and clinics that are direly stressed for needed resources.  Most patients tend to seek medical care in Monrovia due to the lack thereof in their respective regions.  A diagnostic center will serve all in need and improve care. There has not been a greater need for basic and advanced diagnostic services in the country than now as she strives to rebuild her healthcare infrastructure and services. Equipment such as electron microscopes, modern X-ray machines, EKG machines, echo-Doppler, CT scans, ultrasound, and MRI machines will greatly enhance the diagnostic effort of healthcare providers.  Liberians have fully repatriated with plans to rebuild their lives and hope for better health care services.  Un-diagnosed health conditions prolong the course of treatment and can be an added personal health burden.   Proper diagnosis will result in proper treatment and shortened duration of ailment and course of care.
